I have found in my relatively small community, after some initial reluctance, I am fully and graciously accepted. I must say that my first impressions were a bit difficulty as I found people stumbling with my name and asking that ever uncomfortable question of : "Now, where are you from"--to which I gleefully respond California. It is difficult to say whether I would fit as well if I were coming from Pakistan or spoke with a heavy accent or wore traditional garb. America in fact is a land of immigrants and so seeing people of different colors and looks is commonplace.
So I would like to believe that I am accepted and not talked about behind my back or mocked as I drive through town. If I am, then please do not tell me and let me exist in my bucolic unknowing bliss.......
